Organised by the Government of Gibraltar’s Ministry of Culture as part of the celebrations running up to its National Day in 2012, Gibraltar Calling was born as an annual festival that grows in status with every passing year. While a star-studded bill – Take That, Andrea Bocelli, Liam Gallagher, Pete Doherty, Mel C and local acts – was curated by events agency Neon Angel for the 2019 edition, Stageco was proud to be chosen as the staging provider when the event was held on September 19th at Europa Point Leisure Complex, literally on the edge of the European continent. The production logistics, however, proved to be somewhat of a challenge. Apart from having to deal with very high winds, the only way to get to the site was by driving through the half-kilometre Dudley Ward Tunnel, which is just four metres high. This meant that the local police had to impose one-way traffic and we could only gain access at night. Stageco was brought into the project by Neil McDonald who led the production in collab¬oration with Philip Winward of Electric Fly. The company supplied and built an elegantly curved Boogdak stage roof with PA/video wings, a FOH mix riser and delay towers. To aid practical convenience, part of the steel stayed behind to be kept in storage in Seville for use on the MTV EMAs.
